Apache vs. IIS ... Who Uses What?

Apache is good enough for the White House, USDA, the DNC, FBI, NBC, Toyota, the NRA, the Library of Congress, MIT, ESPN, CNN, the US State Department, and E-Trade. Why not use something that’s free and in use by the some of largest organizations on the Internet?

According to Slashdot, Apache surpassed th 50 million mark back in October of 2005, and is continuing to grow at a robust pace. I’d be curious to see what percentage of Internet traffic is routed to web servers running Apache. Port 80 software claims that 53.7 % of Fortune 1000 companies run IIS . That’s probably true, and it’s likely due to the fact that a large corporation is more likely to procure services and support from other large entities.

There is the illusion of security in numbers there since Microsoft is the 800 lb gorilla on the block, where as Apache can be perceived as the diminutive David, even though it’s all over the Web. It’s the age old open-source vs. closed-source debate. You are only secure if you constantly monitor everything on your server and always maintain the latest updates to software running on it…and even then, you’re probably just running a potentially insecure box because those that wish to do damage to a server will inevitably find a way in. You can lock your house, lock your windows, build a fence around your yard, but a burgler will always find a way in.
