I’m a former presidential appointee with nearly 20 years of experience as a digital and technology innovator. I’ve been an effective leader of large teams with multi-million dollar budgets; a proven change agent, modernizing traditional organizations using emerging technologies; an established thought leader through public speaking engagements and guest blogging; and a senior executive who understands the integration of business operations and digital technology.

2016 to 2018

I run public sector business operations for the company, helping U.S. federal, state, and local organizations transform the government experience with secure, stable, and scalable open source digital platforms.

Lead sales organization responsible for generating over $20 million in annual revenue.

2014 to 2016

U.S. Department of State

Deputy Coordinator for Platforms

I was a presidential appointee, overseeing the offices that manage online and offline spaces for U.S. public diplomacy, focusing on data-based decisions and individual engagement.

Led global U.S. embassy website upgrade for the Department’s largest digital platform – 150 million visitors and 650 million annual pageviews.

Implemented global public diplomacy prototype CRM with 16 embassies distributed across four continents.

Managed three subordinate offices with 140 total staff and an annual budget of $40 million.

2012 to 2014

Atlantic Media

Chief Technology Officer

Tom was charged with executing business strategy with industry-leading digital and enterprise technology across all brands: The Atlantic, Quartz, National Journal, Government Executive.

Managed digital product infrastructure team handling over 25 million monthly unique visitors across all digital properties, with an average international audience base of 27 percent.

Founded media company CTO advisory group with peers from Vice, Mashable, Politico, Salon.com, Hearst Corporation, Conde Nast, Fast Company, and Vox Media.

2011 to 2012

The White House

Director of New Media Technologies

I was responsible for the security, stability, and scalability of the President Obama’s global digital platforms, powered by Drupal and open-source technologies, connecting people with their president. Read more about my experience at the White House working on ‘We the People’.

Established policies and procedures overseeing the use of open source and cloud technologies to support operations for the White House’s digital presence.

Managed creative and development process for “We the People” petition and advocacy platform, the first digital platform to exercise your First Amendment rights to petition the U.S. government.

2006 to 2011

I managed the engineering team and technical infrastructure to support national legislative advocacy campaigns totaling over 6 million supporters. The technology platforms supported global corporations like Best Buy, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Southwest Airlines, Target, Sanofi, and ExxonMobil.

2004 to 2006

Sr. Software Engineer

I was the first employee hired and was responsible for developing nearly 30 percent  of the first phase of campaign and advocacy software. The tools he built evolved into key systems supporting the Democratic National Committee and Barack Obama’s 2008 and 2012 presidential campaigns. He built the first version of early social networking software that evolved into my.barackobama.com.
